The application of fiberglass foam sandwich panels in refrigerated truck bodies is becoming more and more widespread, which has become a major trend in the development of the industry. In contrast, the performance of traditional metal insulation panels is limited and it is difficult to meet the market’s increasing demand for refrigerated truck performance. Fiberglass foam sandwich panels integrate multiple excellent properties, far exceeding metal insulation panels, and are particularly suitable for transporting products that require low-temperature storage, such as food, vegetables, fruits, cold drinks, meat and seafood.

Key Features Include:

  • Thermal insulation.
  • Lightweight.
  • Easy to clean.
  • Waterproof and moisture-proof, with better sealing performance.
  • Easy to repair.
  • Weather-resistant.

Structural Composition

The refrigerated truck panel is a sandwich structure, with the core material being low thermal conductivity insulation foam (XPS or PU) and the surface layer being FRP (glass fiber reinforced plastic). In order to enhance the structural strength of the panel, a frame structure is added. The usual practice is to add various high-strength materials such as timbers, fiberglass profiles, aluminum profiles, steel profiles, etc. inside or on the edges. In addition, other materials are added as interlayers (plywood, aluminum plates, etc.) to increase its load-bearing capacity. This method is mostly used on the flooring.

Materials and Performance

  • The FRP surface is waterproofed with a gel-coat.
  • The core material is closed-cell rigid low-thermal conductivity insulation foam. You can choose XPS (extruded polystyrene), PU (polyurethane), PVC (polyethylene).
  • The FRP and foam core are bonded with low-temperature resistant glue and compounded in a vacuum environment.
XPS Foam FRP Sandwich Panels
  • Features: XPS foam is known for high moisture resistance, consistent thermal performance, and durability.
PU Foam FRP Sandwich Panels
  • Features: Polyurethane foam offers excellent thermal insulation properties, is lightweight, and has good structural integrity.
PVC Foam FRP Sandwich Panels
  • Features: Rigid PVC foam is strong, waterproof, corrosion-resistant, and has good dimensional stability.

Application of New FRP in Refrigerated Truck Panels

Thermosetting FRP is relatively brittle, not scratch-resistant, easy to wear and expensive, which means higher costs for refrigerated truck manufacturers. The new FRP sheet – CFRT (continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic) laminated sheet is a reliable alternative. Although it does not have the smooth surface of thermosetting FRP, it is more wear-resistant, impact-resistant and relatively cheap. The solution we recommend is to use thermosetting FRP on the outer surface and CFRT on the inner surface to maintain high performance and reduce costs.
