FRP Truck Body Panels

Home » Resources » Blogs

FRP composite panels are increasingly being used in the construction of box truck bodies. Compared with metal structural materials, they have advantages in terms of performance and manufacturing cost. They are lightweight, weather-resistant, insulating, chemical-resistant, easy to process, and simple to maintain, etc. Moreover, there are many types of FRP composite panels, and the specifications can be formulated according to the application requirements. They bring more business benefits to box truck builders.

Gelcoat FRP

The flat FRP used in the box truck body is a mixture of glass fiber and unsaturated polyester resin. Usually, a gel coat is applied to the surface of FRP to increase flatness, structural strength, chemical resistance, and UV resistance. The thicker the gel coat, the more obvious these performance advantages are. However, the thicker the better, and the thickness of the gel coat is usually set according to the thickness of the FRP and its application requirements.

How to Choose Fiberglass Type?

The types of fiberglass used as reinforcing materials are generally fiberglass felt and fiberglass woven fabric. FRP with fiberglass felt is relatively flat and generally thicker, while FRP with fiberglass woven fabric is more rigid and generally thinner.

Common FRP Truck Body Panels

XPS Foam FRP Panels

  • Features: XPS is a high-quality closed-cell insulation foam with an independent honeycomb internal structure, so these foams do not absorb water. Its compressive performance is also very excellent, so the structural strength of XPS composite panels is also very high.
  • Applications: Refrigerated truck bodies, refrigerated trailers, and truck boxes that need to be insulated.

PU Foam FRP Panels

  • Features: PU foam with extremely low thermal conductivity and is a material with excellent thermal insulation performance. Its density is very low, so PU composite panels can achieve the dual effects of thermal insulation and weight reduction.
  • Applications: Refrigerated truck bodies, refrigerated trailers, and truck boxes that need to be insulated.

PET Foam FRP Panels

  • Features: PET foam is a closed-cell foam with a relatively high hardness. It is currently widely recognized as an environmentally friendly material and is recyclable. More and more truck bodies are built using PET composite panels to achieve economic sustainable development.
  • Applications: Dry freight truck bodies.

PVC FRP Panels

  • Features: PVC foam (polyvinyl chloride foam) is a core material that combines many excellent properties such as lightness, firmness, waterproofness, thermal insulation, etc. PVC composite panels are ideal materials for premium box truck bodies.
  • Applications: Refrigerated truck bodies, refrigerated trailers, and truck boxes that need to be insulated.

PP Honeycomb FRP Panels

  • Features: The honeycomb core structure imitates the shape of a natural honeycomb, and can achieve extremely high strength with very little material, achieving lightweight materials.
  • Applications: Dry freight truck bodies.

Plywood FRP Panels

  • Features: Plywood is known for its high strength, which is a widely available renewable resource. But plywood is easy to decompose. When used as truck box panels, they need to be waterproofed to adapt to rainy, humid, and high-salt climates.
  • Applications: Dry freight truck bodies.
